Chapter 9
Nick tells about all the events that all unfold 2 years after the funeral. Tons of reporters, journalists, and gossiping people come to the mansion mansion in the aftermath of the murder. Wild, untrue stories, more exaggerated than the rumors about Gatsby when he was throwing his parties, circulate about the nature of Gatsby's relationship to Myrtle and Wilson. Feeling that Gatsby would not want to go through a funeral alone, Nick tries to hold a large funeral for him, but all of Gatsby's former friends and acquaintances have either disappeared—Tom and Daisy move away with no forwarding address and refuse to come. The only people who go to the funeral are Nick, Owl Eyes, a few servants, and Gatsby's father, Henry C. Gatz, who has come all the way from Minnesota. Henry Gatz is proud of his son and saves a picture of his house. He also fills Nick in on Gatsby's early life, showing him a book in which a young Gatsby had written a schedule for self-improvement. Sick of the East and its empty values, Nick decides to move back to the Midwest. He breaks off his relationship with Jordan, who suddenly claims that she has become engaged to another man. Just before he leaves, Nick encounters Tom on Fifth Avenue in New York City. Nick initially refuses to shake Tom's hand but eventually accepts. Tom tells him that he was the one who told Wilson that Gatsby owned the car that killed Myrtle, and describes how greatly he suffered when he had to give up the apartment he kept in the city for his affair. He says that Gatsby deserved to die. Nick figures out that Tom and Daisy are careless and uncaring people and that they destroy people and things, knowing that their money will protect them from any harm and they just leaving the big mess behind for others to clean up.
Chapter 8
nick wants to tell Gatsby that he should be sorry but then he says the morning might be too late and Gatsby just keeps bringing up Daisy and how she is the nicest woman and the first nice woman he ever met. he made his military uniform the best and he wanted to impress her about his past. Gatsby new that he couldn't giver her everything but they new they where in love. when Gatsby was in war he was very great at it and Daisy would right him during the war and then she would have 6 dates with 6 different men. and then she met Tom. then nick noticed that it was nine and he didn't want to leave Gatsby but he had to go to work. while he was at work jordan called around noon and wanted to see him. Wilson says he know who killed his wife. Heard shots fired and Nick, chauffeur, butler, and gardner rushed to the pool where Gatsby was. They found Wilsons body.. The halocaust was done.
Chapter 7
Gatsby calls off his parties because he is so in love with daisy, which were suppose to be a way to get her back. He also fires his servants to prevent gossip and replaces them with shady individuals connected to Meyer Wolfshiem? who is he? nick also hasn't seen Gatsby for awhile and he got curious.
Nick drives to East Egg for lunch with Tom and Daisy. He finds Gatsby and Jordan Baker there as well. It is the hottest day of the entire summer, also a nurse brings in Daisy's baby girl, Gatsby is speechless and can hardly believe that the child is real. Daisy didn't even seem to really care about her child. During the awkward afternoon, Gatsby and Daisy cannot hide their love for one another. Complaining of her boredom, Daisy asks Gatsby if he wants to go into the city. Gatsby stares at her passionately, and Tom becomes certain of their feelings for each other. tom gets werid and says that they should all go to New York together. Nick rides with Jordan and Tom in Gatsby's car, and Gatsby and Daisy ride together in Tom's car. Stopping for gas at Wilson's garage, Nick, Tom, and Jordan learn that Wilson has discovered his wife's infidelity—though not the identity of her lover—and plans to move her to the West. Under the brooding eyes of Doctor T. J. Eckleburg, Nick perceives that Tom and Wilson are in the same position.
They all decide to take a suite at the Plaza Hotel. Tom asks Gatsby about his intentions for Daisy, and Gatsby replies that Daisy loves him, not Tom. Tom claims that he and Daisy have a history that Gatsby could not possibly understand. He then accuses Gatsby of running a bootlegging operation. Daisy, in love with Gatsby earlier in the afternoon, feels herself moving closer and closer to Tom as she observes the arguing. Realizing he has bested Gatsby, Tom sends Daisy back to Long Island with Gatsby to prove Gatsby's inability to hurt him. As the row quiets down, Nick realizes that it is his thirtieth birthday.
this chapter was crazy so many things happened. i am somewhat confused?

About F. Scott Fitzgerald

Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald was born to a upper-middle class family on September 24, 1896 in saint Paul, Minnesota. He was enrolled in the St. Paul Academy, even then at an early age and he showed a love of the theatre and writing--his first work to appear in print was a detective story The Mystery of the Raymond Mortgage (1909) in the Academy's student paper Now and Then. He then wrote many plays and also some magazines, he loved theatre. He had many works come out one after the other and they were not all the same some were theatres/plays, other maybe articles, and also books or short writings.
Fitzgerald proclaimed: "An author ought to write for the youth of his generation, the critics of the next, and the schoolmasters of ever afterward."
I think that he is just saying he wants to write for the youth and have it still be popular for when the next generation comes. He always wants it to be interesting even after the writing has been around for some time. He wants to provide something that will always keep people on their toes and keep them reading his works after he is long gone.
The 192Os in America was a time of great prosperity, hard labor, war, red scare, flappers, the Charleston, Crime, Gangsters, Prohibition and the Mob, stock market crash, the jazz age, prohibition, race relations, the Ku Klux Klan, urban migration, Sacco and Vanzetti, religious fundamentalism, the Scopes trial, Leopold and Loeb, politics, mass entertainment and consumerism, mass culture, the avant-garde, and the changing role of women, film making and movies, radio, sports: negro league, babe Ruth, Chicago Black Sox, automobile industries. A lot of things happened in the 20s as we learned in American History it was the "roaring" twenties and was known as almost a party time but as always the party has to end and it sure did end in the 1930s when the great depression hit the states and we managed to come out of it and we were still a democracy and not dictatorship.

Thesis
Wilson, the loud soldier, is loud to cover up the quiet, sensitive soldier that he really is.
- “The youth took note of a remarkable change in his comrade since those days of camp life upon the river bank” (Crane 14.12). Henry noticed how the loud soldier was no longer loud at all, he showed quiet belief in his purpose and abilities. He is also showing his sensitive side and how he can be caring by cooking supper, tending to his comrades, and just not using swear words when he talks (which he was known for earlier at the camp). Wilson is noticeably changed from the person he was before and it is for the good.
- “His friend, perceiving him to be awake, came from the fire. "Well, Henry, ol' man, how do yeh feel this mornin'?" he demanded. The youth yawned again. Then he puckered his mouth to a little pucker. His head, in truth, felt precisely like a melon, and there was an unpleasant sensation at his stomach. "Oh, Lord, I feel pretty bad," he said. "Thunder!" exclaimed the other. "I hoped ye'd feel all right this mornin'. Let's see th' bandage--I guess it's slipped” (Crane 14.7-10). Henry awoke and felt like he had been sleeping for one hundred years; Wilson saw that he was awake after Henry cried out. Wilson went over to Henry and tended to his head and fixed his bandage and helps sit him up. Wilson asked Henry how he was feeling and of course Henry’s reply was that he was feeling horrible, Wilson suggested that he get some food. Henry couldn’t believe how caring and sensitive the loud young soldier was, Henry was very happy that he had someone there for him.
- “At the fireside the loud young soldier watched over his comrade's wants with tenderness and care. He was very busy marshaling the little black vagabonds of tin cups and pouring into them the streaming iron colored mixture from a small and sooty tin pail. He had some fresh meat, which he roasted hurriedly on a stick”(Crane 14.11). Wilson was awake along before the others were fast asleep, roasting meat on a stick and using tin pots to cook a steaming mixture. As the others awoke he served them and also brought some to Henry with glee.

Saving Private Ryan

First off i think that there is some similar characters from the book. the tall soldier or Jim- i think that the Sargent is like Jim because he gets hurt and he is still running and fighting and then he keeps getting shot and finally when they are across the bridge he dies. Henry (the youth)- is like upham because he is young and immature and then when he finally shoots the guy he kind of becomes mature.
Light and Dark- no matter if it is light or dark the battles and fighting still do on.
Noise and Silence- the captain was in his own world a lot and it got quiet and he would just watch everything around him. when Wade died they were all silent because he was a part of them just like Caparzo and now they just keep loosing men. Its noisy anytime in battle, its never really quiet.
Clean and Dirty- when Stanly was eating the dirty apples, also they are always dirty their skin is always almost black from dirt and when someone is hurt they just put their hands all over in the blood trying to save the person and their hands get covered in blood.
Youth and Maturity- everyone looks up to the Captain and respects him because he is mature and knows what to do, he has been through a lot. youth is when Upham lets so many people go when he could kill so many and keep his fellow men alive.
Dead Solder- When Wade as calling for his mom and also when Caparzo was reading the letter he wrote for his father.
The Flag- it was in the cemetery at the beginning and then at the end, it might represent honor and battle but I didn’t really understand.
Courage- when the sharp shooter, took left when no body would he was stepping up. When Ryan didn’t want to leave his “brothers” and go home, he wanted to stay and fight.
Manhood- Upham hasn’t reached manhood yet, he is always hiding while battle is going on, and he never shoots, only once at the end.
Self-preservation- when Upham hid behind the cow while everyone else went up and fought and one man died. When the one soldier from Boston, NY started to disobey the captain and walk away because they let the enemy go.
Disregard for Human Life- when they wanted to kill the enemy p.o.w because he killed Wade; it was against the rules. Also just anything in battle they don’t care who or what you are, you’re the enemy so you must die, and that goes for the Americans too.

Themes, motifs, and symbols
Themes: an idea that recurs in or pervades a work
Courage- the youth and the Loud soldier both show courage during the story because they fight through it all and also ever soldier that fights shows their courage.
Manhood- I think that the Loud soldier became a man because of the war towards the end of the book he was no longer loud he was so different in a good way. The Youth also showed his manhood because he no longer was just a child he was a man because of the war.
Self-preservation- everyone who fought in the war had self-preservation because the war just changes you from what I have read in the story, it will scar you for life but it will also make you stronger and believe in yourself because you have to believe in yourself to fight.
Disregard for Human Life- When you go to war you pretty much have to find out were you think you will be going after life and be okay with death because they don’t give you a 50/50 chance of living or dying its either you life through it or you don’t.
Motifs: distinctive feature or dominant idea
Noise and Silence- there was always noise all around, sounds of gun shots and battle, it only seemed to be quiet when henry was sleeping or when he was in his own state of mind during the whole battle and everything around him was happing but in his mind he was silent and almost going slow motion.
Light and Dark- during the night they never really slept, and also it didn’t really matter if it was night or day because no matter what you could always hear gun fire and sound of battle.
Clean and Dirty- i think that clean is when henry became mature because he seemed to know what to do
Youth and Maturity- I think that in the story the war made them become more mature.
Symbols: objects, characters, figures, or colors used to represent abstract ideas.
The Dead Soldier- I didn’t really know this one, I think that when they saw the dead soldier it some what scared them because they hadn’t really fought yet and before they fought they saw kind of a symbol of what it was like and that was the dead soldier.
The Flag- I think that it showed honor for those who fight in war.
