meg finds one glove in the postal box with a german song translated by lauries tutor.all of the girls are invited to a picnic at lauries and there are many other people there, some are very rude to the girls and alot of the people break off into many different groups and converstaions.

jo submits her manuscripts to the newspaper and they publish them, jo now makes money for them, she is proud to help support her self and her family.mr. march is ill and marmee is sent to d.c to see him, along with mr.Brookes for company.

Response: i think that Jo will become a very good writer and have it as a living someday, maybe even become famous. all of the girls seem to be loving life and just living it at the moment, they are sad that marmee had to leave, that would be hard but i think it is good that they all have each other, they write her letters, each one a different way, even Mr.Laurence and Laurie write her, and Hannah.

reading day two

Jo is invited to a play with Laurie and Amy wants to follow but Jo doesn't let her, Amy tells Jo that she will be sorry. she gives Jo the cold shoulder when she comes home and she burns Jo's manuscripts. Jo is angry and tells Amy that they were her pride and joy and Amy apologizes. Jo and Laurie go ice skating and Amy follows, Laurie tells Jo not to go in the middle because it is thin, Jo doesn't tell Amy and she falls in, Jo is horrified with fear and Laurie saves her. she talks to marmee and say she has a problem controlling quick temper and marmee says she does too, Jo can't believe it because she thinks of marmee as a calm person. Amy and Jo make up, finally.

meg stays with her wealthy friend, she packs her best clothes. they go to picnics, plays and throw parties. at one party the girls talked about her dress and how her mom is planning on having meg marry Laurie for his money. the next party her friends dress her up in really nice clothes and Laurie comes to the party and criticises her for dressing like someone she's not. meg returns home and tells all. marmee says that it isn't true that she is going to force her to marry Laurie, she wants her girls to be happy in youth and marriage.

Response: i think that the life the girls have is great, they get by with what they have and they will be strong women, true women, and probably sucessful.

Chapter 26

Holden concludes his story by refusing to discuss what happened after his day in the park with Phoebe, although he does say that he went home, got sick, and was sent to the rest home from which he now tells his story. He says he is supposed to go to a new school in the fall and thinks that he will apply himself there, but he doesn't feel like talking about it. He wishes he hadn't talked about his experiences so much in the first place, even to D. B., who often comes to visit him in the rest home . Talking about what happened to him makes him miss all the people in his story.

Response- I think Holden may be helpless, the story just kind of ends and leaves you hanging but it was good while it lasted.

Chapter 25

Holden leaves Mr. Antolini's and goes to Grand Central Station. The next day we walks up and down 5th avenue feeling alone and depressed he keeps calling out to Allie to help him get across the road. He decides he is really going to leave New York he pictures himself never talking to anyone again and marrying a blind mute. He goes to his sister's school where he writes her a note telling her to meet him at the museum of art so he can give her the money back. He then sees "fuck you" written on the school and becomes very depressed(i don't think he can be anymore depressed). While at the museum waiting for his sister he helps these girls out by showing where the mummies are while down there he see "fuck you" written yet again on the wall and he begins to think someone will write it on his tomb stone when he dies. He passes out. His sister comes with a suitcase and begs him to let her come along. She gets very upset when he tells her there is no way she is coming. She gives him back the hunting hat and he offers to take her to the zoo. the look at some animals. He sits and watches her play while wearing the hat. He is so happy he thinks he might cry.

Response- very long chapter, he does say he is happy, but he still is very messed up, he is very luck to have Phoebe in his life.

Chapter 24

When Holden arrives at Mr. Antolini's, his wife have just wrapped up a dinner party that was in their apartment. Glasses and dishes are everywhere, and Holden can tell that Mr. Antolini has been drinking. Holden takes a seat, and the two begin talking. As Mrs. Antolini makes coffee, Mr. Antolini asks about Holden's how he got expelled from Pencey Prep. Holden says that he disliked the rules at Pencey Prep. As an example, he mentions his debate class in which students were punished for digressing from their subject. Instead of feeling bad, Mr. Antolini gently challenges Holden, pointing out that digressions are often distracting, and that sometimes it is more interesting and appropriate to stick to the topic. Holden begins to see the weakness of his argument and becomes uncomfortable. But Mrs. Antolini cuts the tension, bringing coffee for Holden and Mr. Antolini before going to bed.

Response-
it was very nice for Mr. Antolini to invite Holden, Holden really needs to work on treating people better. he jsut plain needs help! and he really need to be more open about what people have to say instead of getting all uncomfortable and up tight.

Chapter 23

holden leaves and calls Mr. Antolini, he was an english teacher he had. he is very shocked that Holden got kicked out again and he invites him to stay at his house. holden likes him because Mr. Antolini was the only one to really respect James Castles body after he died.Holden goes back into Phoebe's room and asks her to dance. After a few numbers, they hear the front door open—their parents have come home from their dinner party. Holden tries to fan away his lingering cigarette smoke and jumps in the closet. His mother comes in to tuck Phoebe in, and he hides until she leaves. He then tells Phoebe goodbye, letting her know of his plan to leave New York and move out west alone. She loans him the Christmas money she'd been saving, and he leaves for Mr. Antolini's. On the way out, he gives Phoebe his red hunting hat.

Response- OH MY he let go of his hat maybe this is a good sign, but i can't believe he gave it away although she was nice to him and he loved her.

Chapter 22

he goes back and gets her to listen and tells her why he fails and why he hates school. she tells him that he hates everything. he denies it and she makes him name one thing he likes and he is too busy thinking about the nuns and then he thinks about some boy James castle who jumped out of a window to his death because of teasing of other boys.
He finally tells her that he likes Allie, and she reminds him angrily that Allie is dead. She asks what he wants to do with his life, and his only answer is to mention the lyric, “If a body catch a body comin' through the rye.” Holden says that he imagines a gigantic field of rye on a cliff full of children playing. He wants to stand at the edge of the cliff and catch the children when they come too close to falling off—to be “the catcher in the rye.” Phoebe points out that Holden has misheard the words—the actual lyric, from the Robert Burns poem, “Coming Thro' the Rye,” is “If a body meet a body coming through the rye.”

Response- Holden i think will eventually get his life together. phoebe is right he hates many many things, and allie is dead and he will never get him back, he really needs to move on but he obviously can't do it alone.

Chapter 21

he takes an elevator to his parents apartment, he tells the new elevator operator that he wants to visit the people across from him, he sneaks into his parents apartment and looks for his sister, she isn't in her room but she likes to sleep in D.B.'S room when he is gone to Hollywood. she is sleeping there peacefully. he watches her sleep and goes through her school books. he finally wakes her up and she is so happy to see him and just rambles on about everything. she then realizes he is home 2 days early and that he did get kicked out. she says over and over that dad will "kill" him. he tries to say no and she covers her head, he leave to go get smokes.

Response-
i think that he was really excited to see his sister and to get to really talk to her but i don't think that it went as planned, i hope things get better for him in the next few chapters!?

Chapter 20

Holden gets very drunk after Luce leave, he calls sally and makes her and her Grandmother very angry. he tries to make a date with 2 other women, a hat check girl and a bar singer? he fails at both. He decides to walk to the duck pond in Central Park to see if the ducks are still around. Along the way, he becomes quite upset when he drops and breaks the record he had bought for Phoebe. Because he had splashed water in his hair at the hotel in an attempt to sober up, his hair begins to freeze and fill with icicles. At the duck pond, he worries about catching pneumonia and imagines his funeral. He missed Allie's funeral, he says, because he was in the hospital after breaking the garage windows with his bare hands. He remembers going to Allie's grave with his parents. He becomes disgusted and sad, because the idea of placing flowers on the grass that covers the stomachs of the dead disturbs him. he really wants to talk to phoebe so but he knows he is running low on money, so he finally goes home, figuring that his parents will be asleep.

Response- Holden really really just needs help, these chapters are just full of him, its really good that he is going home, even though he is scared about what his parents will do, i really think that it will be best.

Chapter 19

Holden finally meets Luce and he remembers how they used to talk about sex, and Holden found Luce amusing. Luce is being really nice to Holden and Holden wants to talk about sex, Luce's doesn't want to and says he need psychoanalysis, which his dad does. Holden is making ridiculous comments and Luce leaves.

Response- like i said he just keeps pushing people away. he really needs help.

Chapter 18

after leaving the skating rink, Holden goes and gets lunch, once again he eats a lot for his usual self. he wants to call jane his mind wanders about this time she dances with a boy and Holden didn't like him. then he called her but no one answered. he called a kid that he knew from Whooton and they are going to meet for drinks later. Holden has nothing to do so he decides to go to the show. after the movie he goes to the bar were he will meet Luce. he decides that he would never be able to go to war he would probably kill himself instead. he thinks all of this because the movie was about the war.

Response-
Holden really needs help. I wish this story would just unfold it keeps draging on with him meeting with friends and jsut pushing them out because they aren't meeting his needs.

Chapter 17

at 12 he goes to meet sally ant the Baltimore hotel, like always she is late but she still looks very good. they go to the movies and they talk, Holden seems to be getting very annoyed. he calls her a royal pain the the ass and the date ends.

Response-
Holden can't seem to keep people in his life, he chooses the ones that he wants and pushes the others away.

Chapter 16

Holden goes for a walk, he still is thinking about the nuns and how they are so giving and wonderful. he also buys a record for phoebe because she is so caring and loving and Holden loves to talk to her because even though she is only ten years old she understands him. He sees an little boy walking in the street, singing, “If a body catch a body coming through the rye.” This really cheers him up, and he decides to call Jane, he hangs up when her mother answers the phone. since he will be meeting Sally soon, he buys theater tickets to a show called I Know My Love, which stars the Lunts.
Holden really wants to see his sister, he goes to look for her in the park because he remembers that she roller-skates there on Sundays. He meets a girl who knows her. she tells him that his sister is on a school trip to the Museum of Natural History, but she remembers that the trip was the day before. Holden walks to the museum, remembering his own class trips. he loves the musum how everything is frozen, life is frozen in time, the people there don't change and the people that leave change.

Response- it seems that Holden's favorite people are Jane and his 10 year old sister, i think it is because it reminds him, like always, of when he was happy. i really wonder how this date is going to go, things could get ugly or they may go well?!...

Chapter 15

He finally called Sally, they made a date. he checked out of the hotel and didn't know what to do with his bags so he checked them into one of those boxes and they give you a key. He hadn't eaten in a while so he went and got breakfast, he ate an unusually large breakfast, he said he is so skinny because he is a small eater. he talks about loosing his money and how his parents don't like it, also he talks about his mother and how she hasn't been well since Allie's death. at the little cafe he is eating breakfast at two nuns sit by him on the stools and he finds out that they are moving to Manhattan to teach. he forces them to take ten dollars and then he realizes that he needs money for his date with sally but he really wanted to give them more, but he said money also makes you depressed.

Response-
i think that Holden wants to have some type of faith but he doesn't want to because Allie has been taken from him and his family. Holden really spends his money too and i think that is why his dad gets angry.

Chapter 14

He decided to talk out loud to Allie, he does it sometimes and it is
sad for him he told Allie to go to get his bike. it all started Holden
and this kid bobby fallen where going to to go to the lake and they
packed lunch and brought their BB guns, Allie
really wanted to come but Holden wouldn't let him, he really regrets
not letting him come too. he finally got ready and got into bed, he
wanted to prey but he couldn't he was atheist, he said all his siblings
were because their parents had different religions. Maurice and the prostitute came back and they wanted 5 dollars, and they had knocked on the door, he said he was psyicic and he knew who it was. he got out of bed and it was them, Holden
refused to give them the 5 dollars so Maurice snapped him, where it
hurts, and also slapped him, the prostitute knew where his wallet was
and so she got the 5 dollars, Holden was crying, finally they left.
Holden just laid there on the floor, he wanted to get dress, (he
pretended that Maurice had shot him in the gut) and have a gun, then he would walk down the stairs with blood everywhere, he would get to the elevator in the lobby
and ring for it, when the doors would open he would see the horror on Maurice's
face and put 6 bullets in his big hairy belly, then he would go back up
stairs and Jane would sew up his guts. Holden really wanted to commit
suicide, he wanted to jump out the window, but he didn't. instead he
went to bed. finally.

Response-
Why didn't Holden just
give them the 5 dollars, usually he doesn't care and he just does
stuff, but he also says that when he is in the mood he will be really
stubborn. i feel really bad for him, he just wants to end life, but yet
he won't do it, i think that he knows there is still hope for him to be
happy.

chapter 13

Holden walked 41 "gorgeous" blocks back to the hotel, because he didn't
feel like getting into another taxi cab. on his walk back home he
thought all about his stolen gloves and if he thought how he would get
them back if he knew who took them. he also talked about how he is a
"yellow" kind of guy and that it isn't always a good thing. he got onto
theelevator and the elevator guy asked if he wanted a prostitute and Holden
agreed and told the guy his room number. he got all cleaned up, mainly
because he was bored. he talked about how he was a virgin and that this
might be his chance to get some practice. theprostitute was his about
his age. right away she took off her dress and then he said how he just
wanted to talk, so she made him hang up her dress. she made him
depressed. she kept asking what his problems is, all he wanted to do
was talk. he told her that he hadsurgery and he was still healing, she
asked why she had been asked to come, he said because he thought he was
better but he really isn't, he also got really annoyedbecause she sat on his lap and no matter what he said she wouldn't get off. he finallly paid her 5 dollars and she left.

Response- Holden obviously just wants to be comforted with someone to talk to. the prostitute isn't helping, she makes him feel really down and depressed and sad.

chapter 13

He gets a cab and goes to Ernie's, its a bar and the owner is Ernie and he plays the piano. he finally gets a very small table that he has to climb to, and he orders a drink, this time with alcohol in it. a girl that his brother dated, Lillian Simmons, comes up to him and she has a navy commander Blop with her and they seem to be dating. he says that she is mainly being really nice or phony nice because she just wants him to tell his brother about it, she asks about his brother and what he is doing and he tells her that he is in Hollywood and she gets really interested. finally as she is taking up the isle, she asks him to join her and her commander Blop, he lies and says that he has to go meet someone.

Response- He thinks everyone is really annoying, but yet he wants company, and someone to talk to, and when he gets offered he turns it down and does his own thing, i really think that he need and wants a specific person, Jane, to really talk to.
